Lawmakers Pass Timothy's Law

Timothy's Law was passed Wednesday by the state legislature.

The bill, which has been in the works for a very long time, requires that
health care providers cover certain mental health illnesses, including major
depression, bipolar disorder and panic and eating disorders.

It's named after Timothy O'Clair who committed suicide in 2001 when he was
just 12 years old. His father had been trying to get him help for years, but
his insurance company wouldn't help. After his son's death, he committed
himself to changing the laws.

Tom O'Clair said, "It's really a testament to what can be done in Albany
when people work hard and stick together and actually sit down and talk."

"It's just proof positive that grassroots involvement in government is a
very strong force and one that can achieve tremendous success," said Assemblyman
Paul Tonko.

If Governor Pataki signs the bill, insurance companies will have to provide
30 inpatient days of treatment as well as 20 outpatient days.
