Another Voice: Don’t let Farm Bill take food from the hungry op-ed by Susan Zimet

10/22/2018

The congressional farm bill, the federal policy on agriculture and food programs, comes up for reauthorization every five years. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps, is included in this omnibus legislation. SNAP provides food assistance for more than 40 million low income people, or one in eight Americans. Despite providing a modest benefit of $1.40 per person per meal, SNAP helps put food on the table, and has long-term benefits for children’s health and educational attainment.

SNAP is the country’s most effective anti-poverty program, lifting nearly 8.4 million people out of poverty, including 3.8 million children in 2015. SNAP also has one of the most rigorous quality control systems of any public benefit program.

In the past, with bipartisan support, farm bills that protected the SNAP program were reauthorized. However, in the past few years, the Republican House is determined to take away this program from many in need, along with cutting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. This past session the House Republicans passed a bill without Democratic support that will reduce or eliminate benefits for more than 1 million households, which include 2 million people.

Voter Registration Drive

09/13/2018

SIGN UP TODAY!

Tuesday, September 25, 2018 is the National Day for media attention and outreach to build unity and support for voter registration.  Voter registration can, and should,  be an on-going effort, particularly for nonprofit organizations providing assistance to those experiencing poverty.

If you would like materials for conducting a voter registration drive contact us info@hungeractionnys.org

Click here for information on New York State’s voting rules

Click here to check on registration status and find polling place  Many people believe in error that they are properly registered and ready to vote.  A quick check with the New York State Board of Elections will provide confirmation. Any issues (change of address, registration purge) can be resolved.

Though voting on line in New York State is an option for anyone who has a NYS Dept of Motor Vehicles issued drivers license or identification card, we highly recommend that you collect paper registrations and deliver them to your county board of elections (It doesn’t hurt to make a copy of them before turning them in).

Fighting to Protect SNAP in 2018 Farm Bill

05/09/2018

The House Ag Committee is proposing drastic cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. If these changes are enacted millions of Americans would be put into risk of hunger and food insecurity. New York’s own, Representative John Faso, serves on the Ag Committee and is a proponent of the bill.  We went to tell him, in no uncertain terms, his actions will harm low income New Yorkers.
