Poverty is not a catch phrase – Angela Warner

01/19/2020

Poverty is not a catch phrase,it is serious reality that many New Yorkers are living with every day. New Yorkers should not have to experience the indignity of food and housing insecurity, poor quality education, inadequate or inaccessible healthcare. The austerity budgets of the past decade have contributed to New Yorkers not reaching their potential; while the millionaires and billionaires get tax breaks,” said Angela Warner Board Chair, Hunger Action Network of NYS

New York Students have been waiting far too long for educational justice – Jasmine Gripper, executive director, Alliance for Quality Education

01/12/2020

“New York Students have been waiting far too long for educational justice, said Jasmine Gripper, executive director, Alliance for Quality Education. “Rochester City School District just laid off over 150 educators mid-year and yet Governor Cuomo refuses to fully fund the state’s Foundation Aid formula. This refusal has lead to record inequity in New York’s schools and opportunities denied to Black students, Brown students, immigrant students and low income students. It’s time to reverse the inequity and invest our children.”

The crisis we see didn’t happen by chance. It happened by design. – Charles Khan of the Strong Economy for All Coalition

01/11/2020
“Governor Cuomo showers New Yorks record breaking number of billionaires with tax breaks for their yachts and condos, while the rest of NY endures never ending excuses and stingy funding for our communities. It’s led to record numbers of homeless, rising levels of inequality, crumbling infrastructure, and an exodus of middle and low income families from New York. The crisis we see didn’t happen by chance. It happened by design. We need to dramatically change course by raising taxes on Wall St. banks, billionaires, and ultra-millionaires and invest new resources in our communities to ensure that all families have what they need to lead healthy, happy and meaningful lives,” said Charles Khan of the Strong Economy for All Coalition.

31st Annual People’s State of the State Press Conference

(Albany, NY) Against the backdrop of multi-billion dollar budget deficits and expanding needs, the Hunger Action Network of New York State hosted the 31stPeople’s State of the State. This proactive event united numerous advocacy organizations that called for a responsible state budget that raises revenues from our state’s millionaires and billionaires to meet the needs of all New Yorkers regardless of race, immigration status, ethnicity, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, income or zip code. Representatives from advocacy organizations from around the state detailed proposals to raise revenues from the wealthiest New Yorkers to provide services to the millions of struggling New Yorkers who have been suffering under the last decade of austerity spending. The groups also called upon the Governor to abandon his two percent state spending cap that has disproportionately harmed programs and services for lower-income families across this state.

Join the NYS Poor People’s Campaign on January 14th

People’s Needs, Not Corporate Greed!

Join the NYS Poor People’s Campaign on January 14th – the first full week of legislative session – to demand that our elected officials prioritize people over profits in 2020. We cannot accept the false narrative that there are no resources to provide New Yorkers with healthcare and housing. Our state has immense wealth concentrated in too few hands – and our elected officials have failed to take any meaningful steps to fix New York’s inequality, which is the worst in the nation. We know the truth is that NYS has favored billionaires at the expense of the people of this state, but it doesn’t have to be this way. We must insist that our elected officials fight poverty, not the poor, by passing legislation that guarantees housing and healthcare for all!

We need to #PassNYHealth, #GoodCause, and #HSS so we can have #MedicareForAll and a #NYHomesGuarantee!
