School Meal Application Toolkit – Hunger Solutions New York

Hunger Solutions New York and No Kid Hungry New York have created a School Meal Application Toolkit (https://hungersolutionsny.org/federal-nutrition-programs/school-meals/school-meal-application-toolkit/) to help school districts communicate with families about the importance of completing free and reduced-price (F/RP) applications.

In New York State, all schools are required to collect household income information either through a F/RP application or an alternative household income formโ€”even if the school offers free meals to all studentsโ€”to establish economic need for state and local funding.

The strategies and resources included in this toolkit can be used to:

โ€ข Encourage families to submit a F/RP school meal application.
โ€ข Communicate clearly the benefits of submitting household income information through a F/RP school meal application.
โ€ข Improve the return rate of F/RP school meal applications.

Explore our new toolkit to find an array of resources specially designed to bolster your efforts to collect meal applications, including flyers, sample outreach language, and social media posts and graphics.

In the omnibus spending bill passed last week, Congress failed to extend USDAโ€™s authority to issue critical child nutrition waivers to ensure childrenโ€™s continued access to healthy meals this summer and next school year. By failing to prioritize these waivers, Congress has jeopardized childrenโ€™s health, wellbeing, and academic recovery, and furthered the already staggering financial and administrative burdens on schools and summer meal sponsors.
Congress canโ€”and mustโ€”fix this, and do so quickly. The next pandemic relief legislation passed by Congress must extend USDAโ€™s waiver authority and include previously introduced child nutrition provisions that will expand access to school meals and Summer EBT.
Thank you to the many advocates who have joined the nationwide call for waiver extensions. Your continued advocacy is needed. Contact your representatives today to share the urgent need for waiver extensions and additional investments in child nutrition programs.

GardenShare produces an annual Local Food Guide that lists St. Lawrence County farm stands, u-picks, farmers markets, restaurants, and other outlets that offer locally grown food. Each year this guide features a unique cover, and we want you to design it!
Please submit an original design to info@gardenshare.org by March 9, 2022. Your design should illustrate the variety of local food available in the region.
Artwork may include photography or any two-dimensional piece that can be reprinted. The Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County provides images for your use via its Farm-to-Table Initiative project. Request access to those photos and submit your high resolution file to info@gardenshare.org.

GardenShareโ€™s Local Food Guide is the countyโ€™s leading resource for information about locally grown foodโ€”buying and selling it within an ever-expanding local food system.
Each May, 10,000 copies of the guide are distributed throughout the county. For as little as $100.00, your ad can reach thousands of people right in your neighborhood.
Your advertising dollars not only help offset the cost of producing the guide, but those dollars also contribute to achieving food security right here in your countyโ€ฆmaybe even right next door?
