Worker organizing is a key front of struggle in the battle for racial and economic justice. The COVID-19 pandemic helped spur workers into action in response to poor wages, working conditions, and lack of power in the workplace. The โ€œGreat Resignation,โ€ increased media attention on strikes, and the Amazon and Starbucks unionizing campaigns, for example, all point to a growing awareness among workers of the injustice of our current economic system and the power that their labor represents. Farmworkers in New York State are also launching new organizing, after finally winning the legal right to unionize in 2019. Join Labor-Religion Coalition of NYS, Trabajadores Agrรญcolas Unidos (TAU), Alianza Agrรญcola, Rochester & Genesee Valley Area Labor Federation, SEIU Local 200United, Starbucks Workers United, the NYS Poor Peopleโ€™s Campaign and more on May 14 in Geneva, NY for the next in our series of Truth Commissions to hear the plight, fight, and insight of workers in Western NY who are building power in their workplaces and communities.

Register now to join us in-person or virtually on Saturday May 14th from 2-4PM: https://www.laborreligion.org/labor-and-the-3rd-reconstruction!

Fresh Food Connect Informational Webinar – Zoom

04/26/2022
An open invitation to local hunger relief & food access organizations from Fresh Food Connect

Are you looking for new ways to connect with your local community?

Fresh Food Connect works with hunger relief & food access organizations to close a critical gap in local food systems. As we know, more than 1 in 10 people in the US experience food insecurity every year. At the same time, 1 in 3 US households grows some amount of food at home. Fresh Food Connect links these two through a mobile app that streamlines communication between you and your local home and community gardeners.

The process is simple: gardeners download the free app and indicate when they have extra produce. From there, local nonprofit operators can choose to receive drop-offs or pick up the donations directly from gardenersโ€™ homes for redistribution to the communities they work with.

In 2021, we connected over 1,800 community gardeners to 65 hunger relief/food access organizations, engaging communities to share over 67,000 lbs of locally grown produce. Weโ€™d love for you to join us!

Interested in learning more? Register here for our informational webinar on Wednesday, May 11 at 2:00pm MDT (https://lu.ma/0uaiijno).

This past, Monday, April 11th, faith leaders, organizers, and poor and low-wage workers gathered in New York Cityโ€™s Wall Street, for a Moral March and Mass Gathering. The gathering was a part of a series of mobilization tour stops the Poor Peopleโ€™s Campaign: A National Call For Moral Revival is co-hosting nationwide. Each tour stop leads us to the historic Assembly and March in Washington DC on June 18, 2022: https://www.poorpeoplescampaign.org/.

Thank you to all who testified including, Jennifer E. Cuffee-Wilson who shared from the pulpit more of the plight, fight, and insight of the Shinnecock Nation, โ€œWe are surrounded by nothing but billionaires. One of the billionaires had the nerve to go on national television and tell them that Shinnecock Indian nation is disastrous and they need help. Well, are they helping us? No. but heโ€™s got a house out there. Heโ€™s living on stolen land.โ€

Numerous press outlets covered the March On Wall Street including: The Gothamist Marching in Manhattan, advocates for the poor set their sights on D.C., Common Dreams Poor Peopleโ€™s Campaign Marches on Wall Street Against โ€˜Lies of Neoliberalismโ€™, and others. Special thank you to our interns at Labor Religion Coalition of NYS who were instrumental in getting press coverage!

Commissioner Ball toured maple farms across the state in March to celebrate maple season and New Yorkโ€™s maple industry! Throughout the month of March, maple farms opened their doors to the public to offer tours and pancake breakfasts, sell maple products, and demonstrate the syrup-making process, which includes the traditional system of hanging buckets on trees or more modern methods of production using vacuum systems to increase the yield of sap per tree. Maple Weekends took place at more than 140 maple farms and museums, boosting agri-tourism across New York State.

Commissioner Ball first joined the Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association for a ceremonial maple tapping at Brower Road Sugarhouse in Gloversville to promote the New York maple industry and encourage New Yorkers to support local maple producers. Brower Road is NYS Grown & Certified, which verifies New Yorkโ€™s agricultural producers and growers who adhere to food safety and environmental sustainability standards.

He next visited Crosstown Maple in Ravena, New York with Senator Michelle Hinchey, Chair of the Senateโ€™s Committee on Agriculture, and finally headed to join the VVS FFA at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School for their annual [โ€ฆ]

Action Needed: Urge Senator Schumer to Prioritize Child Nutrition Waivers in COVID-19 Relief Bill

The Senate is currently negotiating a COVID-19 relief package that canโ€”and mustโ€”include an extension of USDAโ€™s authority to issue critical child nutrition waivers that have enabled access to meals amid ongoing operational challenges and economic fallout from COVID-19. Without an extension, the waivers will expire June 30, 2022, jeopardizing summer meal program operations and leaving 800,000 New York students without access to free school meals next school year.

While our Senators have shown continued support on this issueโ€”including by cosponsoring the Support Kids Not Red Tape Act of 2022 introduced last weekโ€”we need their vocal leadership to ensure the Senate prioritizes waiver extensions in this COVID-19 relief package, and that the extensions cover both the summer and the 2022-2023 school year.

Summer meal sponsors, school districts, and most importantly, New Yorkโ€™s children, cannot wait. A recent USDA survey showed that 90% of school food authorities are relying on the waivers to operate nutrition programs this school year. As 97% of schools struggle with rising food costs, and 95% report staffing shortages, continued flexibilities are vital to keep nutrition programs afloat and ensure childrenโ€™s access to healthy food amid economic and educational recovery.

Thanks to Stewartโ€™s Shops Holiday Match Grant, GardenShareโ€™s Bonus Bucks program can reach even more local families in need.

The Stewartโ€™s Holiday Match Grant has distributed nearly $34 million since the programโ€™s inception. This year, GardenShare was a lucky recipient.

Bonus Bucks is a cost-sharing program for income-eligible St. Lawrence County residents. The program assists participants in purchasing either a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share or items at any of the five St. Lawrence County farmers markets.

To learn more about Stewartโ€™s Holiday Match Grant, visit their website: https://www.stewartsshops.com/holiday-match/holiday-match-overview/.
Applications are now open for the 2022 Bonus Bucks program!
โ€ข Are you eligible? Find out on GardenShare.org and fill out the application.
โ€ข Are you already a shopper at the farmers markets or a CSA shareholder? Consider donating to the program to help spread the joys of fresh, local food.
