Join the Labor-Religion Coalition and the New York State Poor People’s Campaign in Albany on March 2nd!

02/27/2024

On Saturday, March 2nd, members of the Poor Peopleโ€™s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival will march and rally in state capitals across the country, bringing the demands of poor and low-wealth people directly to our lawmakers.

In Albany, weโ€™ll be rallying in the midst of a critical New York State budget fight. For months the Hochul Administration has been signalling the need for an austerity budget, and just last month her proposed budget reflected that, including cuts to public services and an overall failure to address ongoing crises around healthcare, housing, and education in New York State.

Join us in Albany in order to push back on Governor Hochulโ€™s proposed budget and to demand funding for critical resources that many in our communities rely on to make ends meet.

2024 Mass Poor Peopleโ€™s State of the State Assembly
Date: March 2nd
Time & Location:
10am: First Presbyterian Church: 362 State St., Albany
11am: West Capitol Park, State St and Washington Ave

If you havenโ€™t yet, sign the NYSPPCโ€™s petition calling on the Governor to stop cuts to essential services, invest in our communities, and tax the wealthiest New Yorkers to ensure theyโ€™re paying their fair share.

Transportation is available from Long Island and New York City. To reserve a seat on the Long Island bus, please email longislandppc@gmail.com and tell us whether youโ€™ll be getting on in Suffolk (Brentwood) or [โ€ฆ]

National School Breakfast Week 2024: Celebrate and Spread the Word

National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) is next week: March 4-8! Hunger Solutions New York and No Kid Hungry New York invite you to join us in celebrating school breakfast and the school nutrition professionals who work hard to ensure access in New York.

New Yorkโ€™s kids need consistent access to a nutritious meal every morning to be ready for a day of learning. In districts across the state, more schools than ever are now able to offer breakfast at no cost to all students through CEP. Yet barriers to traditional breakfast, served in the cafeteria before the start of the school day, can still keep kids from eating their morning meal at school. Schools can leverage Breakfast After the Bell to improve access and maximize participation. Innovative service models such as Breakfast in the Classroom or Grab and Go can meet kids where they are and cut down on time constraints to ensure they have time to eat!

This National School Breakfast Week, we are highlighting the creative ways school breakfast programs are nourishing students and how you can share the impact your program makes in your community!

ADVOCACY UPDATE from Regional Food Bank NENY and FeedingNYS

While Governor Hochulโ€™s Executive Budget includes important investments in NY communities and families, the framework misses the mark on hunger. At a time when food insecurity is on the rise in NY and weโ€™re facing unprecedented demand, the budget proposes a $22M cut to the stateโ€™s Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP), a nearly 40% cut compared with the current funding levels and flat funding for Nourish New York.

The New York State Assembly and Senate are now developing their respective budget proposals, and need to hear directly from you about how critical these programs are. Join us in sending a simple message to our elected representatives: healthy food is a basic human right.

CLICK HERE to sign on. It only takes a minute. We also encourage you to share this petition with your contacts.

Here is some additional information on the issues:

Nourish New York enables food banks to support NY families with NY-grown produce. Since 2020, Nourish New York has provided families in need with over 70 million pounds of healthy, nutritious food from over 4,000 producers across the state.
