The days growing longer and the weather getting warmer can only mean one thing: the start of the growing season is almost upon us!

While planting gets underway, April also marks a special, annual celebration for our gardeners across the state: National Garden Month! Thereโ€™s no better time to be thankful for all the flowers, plants, trees, and herbs that we can grow in our own backyards than this time of year, when the ground begins to thaw and the growing season begins.

Later this month, on April 22, we also celebrate Earth Day โ€“ a day to show our love and appreciation of our environment and natural resources. New Yorkโ€™s farmers have long been at the table in the Stateโ€™s efforts to combat climate change and safeguard our environment for future generations. From protecting New York State farmland and helping farmers preserve their land for future generations to supporting water and soil quality projects, the Department is committed to preserving our natural resources.

As we turn the corner into March, Iโ€™m once again reminded of the sense of optimism and excitement the start of a new growing season always brings. Every year, March helps us kick off the growing season with the sweet, first agricultural crop of the year, maple! New York is home to the largest resource of tappable maple trees in the U.S. and our hardworking producers help make our state second in the nation for production. New York has a long history with the delicious crop, whose discovery and production dates to early Native American tribes. While maple production has become more streamlined and efficient over time, the process remains deeply rooted in tradition as a beloved community endeavor. On March 18 and 19, and March 25 and 26, maple farms across the state will welcome visitors for Maple Weekends, inviting them to taste pure maple syrup right from the source, partake in pancake breakfasts and take tours, experiencing firsthand what itโ€™s like to make maple syrup. I encourage you to read below to find out more on how to support our maple producers this month and all year long.

March also offers more opportunities to celebrate [โ€ฆ]

Happy New Year, everyone! Another year has come and gone, and as we turn the page on 2022, Iโ€™d like to take a moment to reflect with gratitude on all that weโ€™ve accomplished during this busy, but productive year. I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of our agricultural community, the men and women who produce the good food we eat and who work to protect our animals, our land, and our natural resources. Together, we are developing a stronger, more resilient agricultural community for the years to come.

A year ago, we were still emerging from some of the most difficult months of a global public health crisis that highlighted stark inequities within our local food supply chain and debilitated our stateโ€™s economy. While we are still recovering from some of these lasting effects, I am proud of the work both our team here at the Department and all of you, our partners, did to rebuild and strengthen our industry over the last year.

As we usher in a new year, I am more optimistic than ever. I thank you for your partnership and look forward to another year of continued growth and success. I [โ€ฆ]
