Our schools will soon come alive with the sounds of children scurrying in the halls, laughing with friends and sharing summer stories. For many, the best part of returning to classes will be the certainty of knowing that healthy breakfasts and lunches await them every day school is in session.
Ensuring low-income children are fed is one of the great services provided by public schools.
But there are gaps.
Too many students leave school on Friday afternoons not knowing where their next meal will come from. They return to households struggling to put food on the table, where three square meals a day are not guaranteed.
Since 2014, the Schenectady County Weekend Backpack Partnership has worked to keep school children fed by giving students a package of shelf-stable food to take home for weekend meals.
Our partners in this project include the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, the City Mission of Schenectady, liaisons in local school districts, and funding partners. We’ve fed thousands of children through this program, and we’re working to reach more students this year to relieve stress on families hard hit by rising expenses.
You can help us fight food insecurity and improve outcomes for Schenectady County schoolchildren by making a donation to this essential program. For just $240, you can provide a child’s backpack of food for the entire school year. Your donation to the Weekend Backpack Fund is needed now more than ever.
Because the Foundation underwrites all fundraising and administrative costs, 100% of your donation goes directly to help the children.
Hunger doesn’t take the weekend off. We hope you’ll join us in making sure that every Schenectady County student is well-fed.
