Good nutrition during pregnancy and early childhood helps kids grow healthy and strong. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, healthy food and more to pregnant and postpartum participants, infants, and kids under five. Dads and other caregivers can apply for children in their care. WIC serves 370,000 New Yorkers each month, which is only about half of those who are eligible to participate.

Hunger Solutions New York, through a contract with NYS DOH WIC, is pleased to share new resources to educate moms, moms-to-be, and families about WIC.

WIC’s new online virtual assistant, Wanda, is an innovative and effective tool to help families connect to WIC. In a friendly and conversational tone, Wanda asks potential participants questions that prescreen for WIC eligibility. In less than three minutes, families can learn about WIC services, find out if they may be eligible, and get referrals to WIC clinics near them. Wanda is easy to use on a computer, tablet or phone.

Hunger Solutions New York has developed a postcard about Wanda that can be handed out to potentially eligible individuals as they are receiving services from you. The postcard includes a QR code that takes the individual directly to the virtual assistant webpage to begin the prescreen. You can order postcards from Hunger Solutions New York at no cost.
