The goal:

Millions of Americans are afflicted with food insecurity and diet-related diseases โ€” including heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes โ€” which are some of the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S. The toll of hunger and these diseases is not distributed equally, disproportionately impacting underserved communities, including communities of color, people living in rural areas, people who are differently-abled, older adults, LGBTQI+ people, military families, and military veterans.

Lack of access to healthy, safe, and affordable food, and to safe outdoor spaces, contributes to hunger, diet-related diseases, and health disparities. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these challenges further.

We cannot wait to act. And we arenโ€™t.

Hunger, Housing, and the 3rd Reconstruction event December 7

12/07/2021

https://www.facebook.com/events/205121468387819
Join the Labor-Religion Coalition of NYS Today, December 7th, to learn from the plight, fight, and insight of Capital Region community members who are engaged in struggles around food and housing insecurity. In recent years, New York has passed transformative legislation to meet the needs of poor and marginalized communities relating to food and housing. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and exacerbated the extent of these crises and thrown millions into poverty and precarity.

On December 7th we will gather virtually to hear testimony from directly impacted leaders, learn about ways communities are organizing in response, and build solidarity among the poor and dispossessed.

Co-sponsors (list in formation): Labor-Religion Coalition of NYS, Capital Region Poor Peopleโ€™s Campaign, FOCUS Churches of Albany, Schenectady Community Ministries

MAYOR DE BLASIO ANNOUNCES PAY EQUITY CABINET TO FIGHT RACE AND GENDER BASED WAGE DISPARITIES

City Hall veteran Dina Simon appointed to lead the Cabinet

NEW YORKโ€”Mayor de Blasio today announced a new Pay Equity Cabinet to address race and gender-based pay disparities in New York City. An Executive Order will make the Cabinet a permanent part of City government to ensure that pay equity is a mayoral priority into the future.
โ€œPay equity is critical to the safety and overall wellbeing of the most marginalized and vulnerable workers in our city,โ€ said Mayor Bill de Blasio. โ€œIt can make the difference between having one job or two, or between stable housing or none. This Administration has taken bold steps to combat the forces of inequality that hold people back, and this cabinet builds upon the progress we have made to close the pay gap and ensure every New Yorker is treated with the respect they deserve.โ€
โ€œImmigrants and people of color, essential workers who carried us through the bleakest days of the pandemic, are at the forefront of the fight for equal pay,โ€ said First Lady Chirlane McCray. โ€œNew York City continues to pave the way with Paid Safe and Sick Leave Law and other workplace protections, and the Pay Equity Cabinet is a bold step toward closing the race and gender pay gap once and for [โ€ฆ]

USDA Modernizes the Thrifty Food Plan, Updates SNAP Benefits | USDA-FNS

10/25/2021

Increase in Monthly SNAP Benefits

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that it has updated the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP), which is used to set Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit levels. USDA recently re-evaluated the TFP, used to set SNAP benefits, which increased the purchasing power of the plan by 21% for the first time since it was introduced in 1975. As a result, the average SNAP benefit โ€“ excluding additional funds provided as part of pandemic relief โ€“ will increase by $36.24 per person, per month, or $1.19 per day, for Fiscal Year 2022 beginning on October 1st, 2021.

FDA Releases New Salt Guidelines: How to Slash Your Sodium Intake

10/15/2021

FDA Releases New Salt Guidelines: How to Slash Your Sodium Intake
By Lisa Rapaport

Even if the food industry doesnโ€™t adopt the agencyโ€™s recommendations, you can help reduce your risk for heart disease by learning to become a sodium sleuth.
In an effort to curb Americansโ€™ sodium intake, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this week called on chain restaurants and food manufacturers to voluntarily slash the salt content in their products. The goal: to reduce Americansโ€™ typical daily sodium intake from 3,400 milligrams (mg) to 3,000 mg, a roughly 12 percent decrease.

The recommendations would still put Americansโ€™ daily sodium consumption far above the U.S. dietary guidelinesโ€™ recommended limit of 2,300 mg for people ages 14 and up. Yet the FDA said in a statement that โ€œeven these modest reductions made slowly over the next few years will substantially decrease diet-related diseases.โ€

Even if the food industry doesnโ€™t embrace the guidelines, the FDAโ€™s move is a step in the right direction, says Dariush Mozaffarian, MD, MPH, dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston.

โ€œMost Americans will still be far above recommended intakes, but this will still save tens of thousands of lives per year,โ€ Dr. Mozaffarian says.

Beyond Food Drives -the future of emergency food aid

05/18/2021
Beyond Food Drives
State Street Forum on Faith and Public Life
Wednesday, May 19th
12 noon to 1:00 pm

All are invited to join us on Zoom for a thought-provoking conversation about the future of emergency food aid in the Capital District and beyond. This event, co-sponsored by Westminster and the New York State Council of Churches, is the โ€œsoft launchโ€ of what will become a monthly forum on faith and public life. Please help us spread the word!

We have seen a sharp increase in โ€œdrive-thruโ€ food pantries and emergency food collections during the past year. This way of receiving food has been helpful for people who are not comfortable going to supermarkets and for those who have become unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, people are getting vaccinated and COVID rates are declining in most areas. However, there is little public discussion to promote long-term food security in the US. Should our expanded level of emergency food aid become a permanent part of our social support system? Or are there policies and systems that would allow food drives to go out of business?
