Forum on Food Insecurity in New York State

We are excited to announce that Field & Fork Network has partnered with Feeding NYS and the American Heart Association to present an upcoming virtual forum on nutrition and food security policy in New York State. Join us on Wednesday, October 11th from 2:00-3:00 p.m. where we will review the current landscape of nutrition and food security policy in New York and have an engaging panel discussion with members of the New York State Legislature featuring Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Keynote Speaker Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas, Assemblymember Catalina Cruz, and Senator Rachel May. If you would like to submit a question for the legislators for the panel discussion, please email K. Cooper Rohan at crohan@fieldandforknetwork.com with your organization and question. Amelia will be sharing out about the recommendations that the group drafted for the Medicaid 1115 waiver and what is next for the NYS Food as Medicine Coalition. Then we will open the floor to hear more from everyone about events, updates on policy, and how to get involved. Some upcoming events that we know of now are: • The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York's People's State of the State - January 10th at 11:00 a.m. RSVP Here • Double Up Food Bucks NY Advocate Training on Thursday, January 11th, 2024 • Double Up Food Bucks NY Day of Action - Tuesday, February 13th, 2024 In addition to Amelia’s work with the NYS Food as Medicine Coalition, she also is working with The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York and The Food Pantries of the Capital District. In January the Governor releases her Executive Budget. Our convening is to call on the governor and the state legislature to take action in supporting frontline community food providers in the FY 2025 budget process. The Ask: We are asking for the NYS Budget to increase funding for food procurement programs: Fund Hunger Prevention Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) at $75 Million. Fund Nourish NY at $75 Million. Are you or your family members struggling to make ends meet? Are you concerned about your neighbors who don't always have enough food? Do you believe we can do better when it comes to ensuring everyone has what they need to survive and thrive? Join us on May 1st to share and learn how poverty and food insecurity are impacting our community and how we can take action to end them. In recent years, we saw how policy changes made a big difference. Emergency COVID-19 measures actually led to a big reduction in poverty - especially child poverty. But as those measures have expired, poverty is once again on the rise. We can change that - and it starts by coming together.
