Food as Medicine (FAM) interventions change lives. From veggie RX and food pharmacies to medically tailored meals and groceries, and more, we are coming together to develop a community-informed FAM plan for NY that integrates medically tailored food and nutrition services into the state’s Medicaid program, improving health and reducing healthcare costs. The Food as Medicine Workgroup of the NYS Council on Hunger and Food Policy, The Food Pantries for the Capital District, and the New York State Community Food Assistance Network is working together to 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟯𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭-𝟯 𝗽𝗺.

WTEN 10 in Albany featured a story about the impact of inflation on most vulnerable families in the Capital District. Natasha Pernicka, Executive Director of the Food Pantries for the Capital District and convenor of Community Food Assistance of NYS and Angela Warner, Director of the St Vincent Food Pantry and Board President of Hunger Action of New York State. They share the region wide increase in need and on the ground at a local food pantry.

Governor Hochul announced that Great Lakes Cheese broke ground on a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing and packaging plant in Franklinville and Farmersville. With a capital investment of more than $518 million, the project is the largest infrastructure investment in the company’s history and the largest economic development project in the history of Cattaraugus County. Great Lakes Cheese will retain 228 jobs in the region, while adding an additional 215 employees. It will also double its milk consumption to 1.42 billion pounds annually, which will directly benefit New York dairy farmers.

Empire State Development (ESD), the State’s economic development agency, provided an award for a $3.7 million grant and up to $14.6 million in performance-based New York State Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits in exchange for creating 215 new jobs. ESD’s Excelsior Jobs Program encourages businesses to expand in, and relocate to, New York while maintaining strict accountability standards to guarantee that businesses deliver on job and investment commitments.
