Participation in school meals decreased across New York State in the 2022โ€“2023 school year, according to a new report released by the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC). This drop in school meal participation in New York aligns with trends observed in states across the country. Still, the report notes a striking exception: States that funded and implemented state-level policies sustaining universal free school meals saw increases in participation.

It is well documented that a well-balanced, nutritious diet can have a positive impact on health outcomes. However, eating healthier is more expensive than purchasing less nutrient-dense, more highly processed foods. For those battling chronic medical conditions while trying to make ends meet, the cost of healthier food presents a barrier on the path toward improved health. Food As Medicine strives to remove that barrier, so patients can focus on wellness.

In early March, more than 150 friends and supporters of the Food Bank joined us as we โ€˜topped offโ€™ our new facility in Orange County. Guests had a chance to sign the beam and watch along as it was put into place. For several years, our existing Orange County facility has been too small to accommodate the need in that region, so this new facility will be a huge step forward for the Food Bank and our ability to serve our 400 partners and nearly 200,000 neighbors in need throughout the Hudson Valley. We are incredibly grateful to all the supporters making this project possible. In the coming weeks, we will launch a Capital Campaign, inviting donors to help close any final funding gaps.

April Updates from Labor Religion Coalition of New York State

Once again, the New York State Budget is late. Since January, the Labor-Religion Coalition has been advocating for a budget that invests in poor, low-income, and working-class communities across New York State, instead of once again catering the whims of the ultra-wealthy and corporate interests. Now, more than ever, we must continue to put pressure on the Governor and Legislative Leadership to deliver a just budgetโ€”one that invests in the resources and services our communities need to survive.

Read on for updates about our 24-hour Prayer Vigil, a report back from the Invest in Our New York Campaignโ€™s Day of Action for a Just Budget, and a note about the upcoming 2024 Moral Fusion Leadership Awards!

Earlier this week, the Labor-Religion Coalition, the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice, and faith leaders from across New York State held a continuous 24-hour Prayer Vigil for a Just Budget. Folks prayed for Governor Hochul and Legislative Leadership to negotiate and pass a budget that prioritizes the needs of poor and low-income New Yorkers. Two dozen faith leaders from all over New York State participated in the effort.

โ€œOur community membersโ€™ access to adequate housing, healthcare, food, education, living wages, and clean air and water depend on the policies now being negotiated behind closed doors, [โ€ฆ]

From Farm to Food Bank

Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York enews

New York Stateโ€™s Nourish New York program is a lifeline for families and farmers.

For those who are food insecure, this critical program provides access to the nourishment they need while establishing a market for farmers to sell their products. The funding provided allows New Yorkโ€™s emergency food providers, like the Regional Food Bank, to purchase surplus products from New York farmers and dairy manufacturers and deliver it to the communities we serve.

The numbers are shocking โ€” 1 in 4 New Yorkers is considered food insecure. Unfortunately, the demand for healthy food has only been increasing in recent years, but the funding provided has remained flat.

The Regional Food Bank supports the New York Senate and Assembly one-house budget resolutions that would allocate additional money for the Nourish New York program in the FY 2025-25 State Budget. We urge Governor Kathy Hochul to approve this funding as we work to alleviate hunger, prevent food waste and provide nourishment to every single New Yorker.

The ability to provide an assortment of New York-produced nutritious produce, eggs, dairy, and more means [โ€ฆ]
