It is well documented that a well-balanced, nutritious diet can have a positive impact on health outcomes. However, eating healthier is more expensive than purchasing less nutrient-dense, more highly processed foods. For those battling chronic medical conditions while trying to make ends meet, the cost of healthier food presents a barrier on the path toward improved health. Food As Medicine strives to remove that barrier, so patients can focus on wellness.

In early March, more than 150 friends and supporters of the Food Bank joined us as we ‘topped off’ our new facility in Orange County. Guests had a chance to sign the beam and watch along as it was put into place. For several years, our existing Orange County facility has been too small to accommodate the need in that region, so this new facility will be a huge step forward for the Food Bank and our ability to serve our 400 partners and nearly 200,000 neighbors in need throughout the Hudson Valley. We are incredibly grateful to all the supporters making this project possible. In the coming weeks, we will launch a Capital Campaign, inviting donors to help close any final funding gaps.

The Food Bank has always had strong support from apple growers throughout our 23-county region. When growers have apples that are wholesome, but not marketable due to surplus or not meeting retail grade specifications, they know they can partner with the Food Bank to find homes for as many as possible.

The Food Bankโ€™s Strategic Plan charges us to provide equitable and sufficient access to healthy, nutritious, and culturally responsive food throughout our 23-county service area, regardless of whether someone resides around the corner or in a remote, rural community. To reach this goal, we are investing in innovative, collaborative strategies that will best meet the needs of each community.

With funding provided by Feeding America and Feeding New York Stateโ€™s Boundless Collaboration project, the Food Bank has secured a refrigerated, ramp-accessible trailer that will serve as a centralized drop and distribution site so agencies in rural Otsego County can have consistent access to perishable foods like dairy and fresh produce for their distributions. The trailer is the first of its kind in the nation.

Maggie Johnson, Director of the Community Cupboard of Edmeston, where the Hub is located, stated, โ€œWe are so excited to bring this service to our area. Because we are located so far from the Food Bank in Latham, having consistent access to fresh product is an ongoing challenge. The Hub allows us to become a perishable food storage and distribution point for local food pantries, especially those without larger storage capacities, which gives them access to this nutritious food on a more regular basis.โ€
