October is National Farm-to-School Month, an annual opportunity to celebrate everyone who works hard each day to make sure that New York kids have access to farm fresh, healthy, local foods to power them at school. Our Farm-to-School program is one of New York agricultureโ€™s best success stories, helping to increase the volume and variety of locally grown and produced food in schools, providing new markets for New Yorkโ€™s farmers, improving student health, and educating young people about agriculture. Check out more about the program at https://agriculture.ny.gov/farming/farm-school.

Additionally, our 30% NYS Initiative supports our Farm-to-School efforts by increasing the reimbursement schools receive for lunches from 5.9 cents per meal to 25 cents per meal for any district that purchases at least 30 percent of total food cost for their school lunch program on New York State products. We are proud that these programs continue to support local farmers and provide healthy choices for children at school and thank all of our partners across the state who make programs like these possible.

Just as important as providing fresh, delicious local produce for our students is ensuring they are safely distributed and prepared. USDA just released five new fact sheets [โ€ฆ]

September is recognized nationally as Hunger Action Month, a time to raise awareness, take action, and collaborate on solutions to combat food insecurity in our communities. In collaboration with our partner not-for-profit organizations and New York State agencies, the Department has long been committed to the fight against hunger, prioritizing initiatives like the Nourish New York program, the 30 percent New York State initiative, the Council on Hunger and Food Policy, our Farm-to-School program and Farmersโ€™ Market Nutrition program, and so many more. Weโ€™d like to take this opportunity to salute the daily work and dedication of the many community organizations, food banks and food pantries, and members of the Stateโ€™s Council on Hunger and Food Policy [โ€ฆ]

Visit Your Local County Fair for a Chance to Win Tickets to the Great New York State Fair

New York is home to more than 50 county and youth fairs, providing opportunities for New Yorkers of all ages to learn about local agriculture, where our food comes from, and how itโ€™s grown, harvested, and marketed to the public.

This summer, to help promote county and youth fairs across the state as well as celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Taste NY program, the Department is hosting a new #FindMeAtTheFair contest. For a chance to win prizes, including Taste NY regional gift baskets and VIP seating for concerts at The Great New York State Fair, county fairs across the state will offer a โ€œFind Me at the Fairโ€ New York State-themed selfie station that fairgoers can interact with. To participate in the contest, fairgoers can post a selfie on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #FindMeAtTheFair. A QR code provided at the selfie station will provide directions for how to ensure participants are entered in the Taste NY #FindMeAtTheFair contest.

Earlier this month, Commissioner Ball headed up to the North Country to celebrate the completion of Agri-Markโ€™s nearly $30 million expansion and modernization project at its cheese manufacturing facility in Chateaugay. The expansion is retaining more than 100 full-time jobs, supporting more than 500 agricultural jobs in the region, and helping to boost the stateโ€™s dairy industry in Northern New York โ€“ a fantastic way to celebrate Dairy Month. The 9,600 square-foot expansion included a state-of-the-art cheese production room, which has improved the facilityโ€™s efficiency, and the rebuilding of the 110,000 square-foot manufacturing center, reconfiguring the layout of the facility, and purchasing new equipment and machinery. You can read more about the expansion here and view photos of the new facility here.

Itโ€™s officially one of our favorite months of the year โ€“ known to most as โ€œJune,โ€ but to us, more importantly โ€“ as Dairy Month! Starting with World Milk Day on June 1, Dairy Month provides us all an opportunity to recognize our tremendous dairy farmers and dairy manufacturers who are producing and processing some of the very best dairy products in the world. Dairy is the largest single segment of New Yorkโ€™s agricultural industry, boasting nearly 3,200 dairy farms, from major global processing companies to small, family-run operations. Plus, New York is the nationโ€™s fifth largest producer of milk, which is also our stateโ€™s official drink!

At the Department, we are looking forward to spotlighting New Yorkโ€™s dairy industry all month long by highlighting the sustainability practices of New York dairy producers and processors, as well as the public health work of the Departmentโ€™s Milk Control and Dairy Services team, through some exciting opportunities and events! Commissioner Ball kicked off the celebration with a visit to Castleton Elementary School on June 1 for the first event in our Dairy Education Days series, which brings members of the Department to elementary schools across the state to [โ€ฆ]
