$561,000 invested to make Schenectady more food secure

In this week with so much attention on gathering for a healthy meal, The Schenectady Foundationโ€™s announcement of granting $561,000 to seven community organizations is especially appropriate.
โ€œThis second round of grants will build a healthier and more sustainable food system in our community,โ€ said Robert Carreau, executive director of The Schenectady Foundation. โ€œThese grants bring our total investment in food security to $1.8 million since the start of the pandemic.โ€

This yearโ€™s grant recipients are:
โ€ข Cornell Cooperative Extension ~ $150,000 to support the second year of its Healthy Living 360 program, a collaborative project that brings [โ€ฆ]

SNAP Outreach Funding Opportunity for Schools & Community-based Organizations

The No Kid Hungry ๐—ฆ๐—ก๐—”๐—ฃ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น๐˜€ ๐—ข๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† will provide funding to community-based organizations and schools to maximize SNAP enrollment and participation. SNAP helps to ensure that families have the groceries they need and kids have the food they require to grow and thrive.

Update on the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling Law

๐™๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง ๐™‡๐™ค๐™˜๐™–๐™ก ๐™€๐™ข๐™š๐™ง๐™œ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™ฎ ๐™๐™ค๐™ค๐™™ ๐™๐™š๐™ก๐™ž๐™š๐™› ๐™€๐™ฆ๐™ช๐™ž๐™ฅ๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ
The goal of this funding program is to assist 501(c)(3) not-for-profits that provide emergency food relief in New York State. Approximately $500,000 million is available for Local Emergency Food Relief Equipment Grants.

๐˜Œ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Œ๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต
The following types of equipment that assist local emergency food relief organizations in providing food to those in need are eligible for funding under this grant program:

โ€ข Trucks, refrigerated vehicles and related equipment (trailers, insulated food storage containers, etc.) used in the transport of food; and
โ€ข cooling equipment (freezers, refrigerators, walk-in freezer or cold room, etc.) and related installation costs (electrical, delivery, etc.).

October is Farm-to-School Month! Thereโ€™s no better time to celebrate the bounty of New Yorkโ€™s agricultural products in our schools than harvest season. From local New York apples to fresh veggies, schools across the state have been supporting our farmers by serving up delicious lunches and teaching our students all about where their food comes from.

The Department is proud to be a key player in the Farm-to-School effort, with programs like the 30% Initiative, the Farm-to-School grant program, New York State Grown & Certified and Nourish New York. Stay tuned for an exciting announcement on the Farm-to-School grant program [โ€ฆ]

Third Round Opens for the Schenectady Foundation Thriving Neighborhoods Challenge

Let the third round begin!

Residents have the opportunity to apply for a share of up to $250,000 in TNC grant funding to help bring their ideas to life.โ€. Go to our blog to see how many already have an idea โ€“ or at least the germ of one โ€“ of how theyโ€™d like to spend it.

The Schenectady Foundation will host information sessions through August. The first was Tuesday at Northside Village Community Room on Van Vranken Avenue.

This past Saturday, a white supremacist opened fire at a supermarket in a Black neighborhood in Buffalo, NY. Our sibling organizations Food for the Spirit and Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust have been working to gather support for our Buffalo relatives.
