People, Parks, and Power: A National Initiative for Green Space, Health Equity, and Racial Justice

10/25/2021

People, Parks, and Power Funding Opportunity

People, Parks, and Power (P3) https://preventioninstitute.org/projects/people-parks-and-power is a new funding opportunity that supports the work of grassroots and community-based collaboratives. This opportunity is valuable to advancing equity and community engagement aims in the parks, open space, greenspace, and stormwater infrastructure policy advocacy arenas. P3 is a joint effort of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, led and managed by Prevention Institute. The initiative is designed to fund policy advocacy and base-building groups led by people of color to advance policy and systems changes in the park equity and greenspace arena.

Through this new initiative, $7 million in funding is available for community-based organizations and base-building groups working to advance park and green space equity in urban areas across the U.S. through local policy and systems change. Applicants don’t need to have been focused on park equity before—they just need to show a track record of power building and local policy advocacy. P3 will fund groups to flex their organizing, power building, and policy advocacy skills to address longstanding park and green space inequities in communities of color.

Letters of Intent are due by November 4, 2021. If you’d like additional information about the P3 initiative, visit this website: https://www.rwjf.org/en/library/funding-opportunities/2021/people-parks-and-power-a-national-initiative-for-green-space-health-equity-and-racial-justice.html, the Call for Proposals, theory of change and a framing paper, and Changing the Landscape: People, Parks, and Power. FDA Releases New Salt Guidelines: How to Slash Your Sodium Intake

FDA Releases New Salt Guidelines: How to Slash Your Sodium Intake
By Lisa Rapaport

Even if the food industry doesn’t adopt the agency’s recommendations, you can help reduce your risk for heart disease by learning to become a sodium sleuth.
In an effort to curb Americans’ sodium intake, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this week called on chain restaurants and food manufacturers to voluntarily slash the salt content in their products. The goal: to reduce Americans’ typical daily sodium intake from 3,400 milligrams (mg) to 3,000 mg, a roughly 12 percent decrease.

The recommendations would still put Americans’ daily sodium consumption far above the U.S. dietary guidelines’ recommended limit of 2,300 mg for people ages 14 and up. Yet the FDA said in a statement that “even these modest reductions made slowly over the next few years will substantially decrease diet-related diseases.”

Even if the food industry doesn’t embrace the guidelines, the FDA’s move is a step in the right direction, says Dariush Mozaffarian, MD, MPH, dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston.

“Most Americans will still be far above recommended intakes, but this will still save tens of thousands of lives per year,” Dr. Mozaffarian says.

$25 Million Restaurant Resiliency Program Will Support Restaurants and Families in Need
Governor Hochul has announced the launch of the $25 million Restaurant Resiliency Program to provide relief to the restaurant industry, which continues to face severe challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, proposed by the legislature, will build on the State’s successful Nourish New York initiative. It will provide funding to New York’s network of food banks and emergency food providers to purchase prepared meals from New York restaurants and deliver them to families in need.

The Restaurant Resiliency Program will award funding, which was passed as part of the 2021-22 New York State Budget, from the New York State Department of Health to New York’s network of ten food banks across the State. The list of food banks and their award amounts can be found here.

Emergency food providers will work directly with restaurants who are deemed eligible for the program by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. They will need to show capacity to create meals aligning with MyPlate.gov standards, be up to date with licensing requirements, […]

Honoring Hunger Action Month

September is Hunger Action Month, providing an opportunity to raise awareness about hunger and food insecurity in our communities. Proudly, New York State has long been committed to the fight against hunger, launching several groundbreaking initiatives and programs in recent years, including the Council on Hunger and Food Policy, Vital Brooklyn, and the No Student Goes Hungry initiative, to combat hunger, improve access to healthy, locally grown foods, and bring New York-grown foods and beverages to underserved communities. Most recently, the Department’s Nourish New York initiative, which was created to address food insecurity during the pandemic, has brought millions of pounds of New York produced foods to New Yorkers who need it most.

We encourage everyone to show their support by wearing orange on Hunger Action Day, recognized this year on September 17, 2021. Additionally, take action by visiting https://www.feedingamerica.org/take-action/hunger-action-month to find out more about how to help this month and year-round. Many of New York’s food banks are participating with special food drives and events, so be sure to check out your local food bank and see how you can help.
