Truth Commission Report from Labor Power and the 3rd Reconstruction

06/10/2022
Read the full report: https://www.laborreligion.org/labor-power

“We’re living through an era of transformation in work and labor. Longstanding trends of decreased manufacturing and increases in service sector jobs, coupled with rapid advances in automation, have led to increasing precarity among workers. The COVID-19 pandemic caused immediate mass unemployment, but almost as quickly forced workers back into jobs with little or no additional safety precautions, expansions of healthcare coverage, or paid sick and family leave.
Last month we joined several other organizations from around the state to co-host a truth commission on labor power where we heard directly from workers and organizers about their plight, fight and insight.”

“It is always good to get involved and more than anything, to listen and know that we are not alone in the struggle, that there are many people who are with us.” – Marcos Martinez, Alianza Agricola

“It is with this spirit that we are excited to announce the launch of the follow-up multimedia truth commission report! The report is filled with videos, graphics, a detailed written account of the events, and various ways to take action including meeting us in Washington D.C. on June 18 2022! We also wanted to share that our website is now available in both English and Spanish!

On May 7, Commissioner Ball cut the ribbon on a new Taste NY Market at SUNY Cobleskill. The new Market continues the Taste NY program’s efforts to increase the exposure of products made by New York farmers and producers. Located inside of the College’s historic Carriage House Café and General Store, the Market will be operated by SUNY Cobleskill students and is integrated into the existing store, which brings members of the community together around locally made and grown farm-fresh goods. The majority of the SUNY Carriage House inventory, 90%, is either campus-made or locally produced in Schoharie County, while the other 10% is made up of items that are produced in other parts of New York State. Connect Families to WIC with WANDA!

06/06/2022
Good nutrition during pregnancy and early childhood helps kids grow healthy and strong. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, healthy food and more to pregnant and postpartum participants, infants, and kids under five. Dads and other caregivers can apply for children in their care. WIC serves 370,000 New Yorkers each month, which is only about half of those who are eligible to participate.

Hunger Solutions New York, through a contract with NYS DOH WIC, is pleased to share new resources to educate moms, moms-to-be, and families about WIC.

WIC’s new online virtual assistant, Wanda, is an innovative and effective tool to help families connect to WIC. In a friendly and conversational tone, Wanda asks potential participants questions that prescreen for WIC eligibility. In less than three minutes, families can learn about WIC services, find out if they may be eligible, and get referrals to WIC clinics near them. Wanda is easy to use on a computer, tablet or phone.

Hunger Solutions New York has developed a postcard about Wanda that can be handed out to potentially eligible individuals as they are receiving services from you. The postcard includes a QR code that takes the individual directly to the virtual assistant webpage to begin the prescreen. You can order postcards from Hunger Solutions New York at no […]

USDA Announces Framework for Shoring Up the Food Supply Chain and Transforming the Food System to Be Fairer, More Competitive, More Resilient

USDA efforts to create more and better markets will benefit both producers and American consumers through fairer prices, as well as address longstanding issues intensified by pandemic

WASHINGTON, June 1, 2022 – Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is announcing details of a framework to transform the food system to benefit consumers, producers and rural communities by providing more options, increasing access, and creating new, more, and better markets for small and mid-size producers. Today’s announcement builds on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine. This announcement also provides additional details on the June 2021 announcement to strengthen critical supply chains and address longstanding structural challenges that were revealed and intensified by the pandemic.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, USDA made significant investments through its Pandemic Assistance Program, providing immediate relief to producers, businesses, food workers and others. As the pandemic has evolved and Russia’s war in Ukraine has caused supply chain disruptions, it has become clear we cannot go back to the food system we had before: the Biden-Harris Administration and USDA recognize we must build back better and strengthen the food system across the supply chain, from how our food is produced to how it is purchased, and all the steps in between.

21-day Racial Equity Challenge – United Way

06/03/2022
Take the challenge !
As the Jefferson Avenue community continues to rebuild in the wake of the tragic, racially-motivated violence of May 14th, many people and organizations have approached United Way to ask what they can do to help our community recover and heal. For this reason, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County reinvites the community to join our virtual 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge.

Learning, understanding the history of systems that created inequity, and addressing our individual biases and relationship with racial identity is a crucial first step to addressing the systemic inequity that has been woven into the fabric of Western New York for generations.

GardenShare is excited to announce that we are strengthening our partnership with the Potsdam, Canton, and Gouverneur Farmers Markets by hiring a shared Farmers Market Manager. After a successful season in 2021 providing management support in Canton, representatives from all three markets realized the potential for GardenShare to take on an expanded role. Providing consistency and efficiencies that benefit and support both vendors and consumers is an immediate goal. A longer-term goal, through year-round planning, is to expand the existing markets and support other new and existing markets, increasing the impact of our food justice across the county.

We welcome Kathryn Puleo, our new team member who will lead this initiative, as well as taking on some other responsibilities at GardenShare. While you are shopping at the farmers market, come by the manager’s tent to say hi. Let her know why local food is important to you. GardenShare’s team is excited for the farmers market season, we hope you are too.

Nationwide waivers have allowed school districts to provide free meals to all students since March 2020. Without further congressional action, schools must now prepare to revert back to standard operations of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs.

The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) [https://hungersolutionsny.org/federal-nutrition-programs/school-meals/community-eligibility-provision-cep/] is a federal provision that allows high-poverty schools to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students. This option increases school meal participation by removing stigma, maximizes federal reimbursements, reduces administrative paperwork, and eliminates unpaid school meal debt. Prior to the pandemic, over 60% of NYS schools operated CEP.

Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) may be a strategic way to continue to offer free school meals in absence of federal waivers for the 2022-2023 school year. While planning for the upcoming school year, we encourage schools to take a fresh look at CEP.

The deadline to apply for the 2022-2023 school year is June 30, 2022. The CEP application can be found in NYSED’s CEP memo: http://www.cn.nysed.gov/content.
