SAVE THE DATE! Religion In a Time of Crisis, February 13, 2023

hosted by Labor Religion Coalition of New York State

On Monday, February 13, youโ€™re invited to join faith leaders, both lay and clergy, from across New York State for a day-long convening where we will explore the possibilities and challenges of confronting the multiple crises our communities are facing. In particular, we will reflect on the rise of Christian Nationalism and our response to it, ways to connect programs that meet immediate needs to organizing and movement building, and how strengthening connections across our state can help us break down the divisions that weaken our movement.

While the U.S. appears headed toward deepening economic crisis and continued threats to democracy, the importance of religious leaders and communities engaging in movements for social, racial, and economic justice is increasing.

On the one hand, the moral and spiritual formation that we do in our congregations and in the public sphere is especially critical as religious extremism- particularly in the form of Christian nationalism-has increasing sway in our culture and politics.

At the same time, many of our ministries and programs put us in direct contact with those most impacted by our unjust and unequal economic system. As we provide food, clothing, shelter, and other practical support, we see firsthand the contradiction of poverty in the midst of plenty.

Religious communitiesโ€™ positions as moral/spiritual leaders and hosts of โ€œprojects of survivalโ€ can enable us to [โ€ฆ]

$561,000 invested to make Schenectady more food secure

In this week with so much attention on gathering for a healthy meal, The Schenectady Foundationโ€™s announcement of granting $561,000 to seven community organizations is especially appropriate.
โ€œThis second round of grants will build a healthier and more sustainable food system in our community,โ€ said Robert Carreau, executive director of The Schenectady Foundation. โ€œThese grants bring our total investment in food security to $1.8 million since the start of the pandemic.โ€

This yearโ€™s grant recipients are:
โ€ข Cornell Cooperative Extension ~ $150,000 to support the second year of its Healthy Living 360 program, a collaborative project that brings together Schenectady Community Ministries, Schenectady ARC and the city school district to work directly with vulnerable families to get nutritious food into their homes.

โ€ข The Food Pantries for the Capital District ~ $100,000 to continue to operate its Food Access Referral Line program that facilitates grocery deliveries to vulnerable residents. As of August 2022, 2,699 home deliveries had been made in Schenectady County.

โ€ข Schenectady Community Ministries ~ $100,000 to support its โ€œAccess, Solidarity and Impactโ€ project to collect data to better understand the impact its food access programs have on household stability and community health. Eventually this research will be used to develop long-term solutions in Schenectady.

โ€ข Free Food Fridge Albany ~ $75,000 to expand its Schenectady footprint and set up additional refrigerators filled [โ€ฆ]

With guidance from FSNYC staff, students were encouraged to reflect on their time with Farm School NYC. During this yearโ€™s Seminar course, students produced capstone projects illustrating their growth.

A photo of Gabe demonstrating his project at The Peopleโ€™s Forum is pictured on the right. Students were able to present to friends, family, faculty, and the community at large about their time and takeaways from FSNYC.

Students were also able to explore different ways they could continue to support one another beyond the program and deepen some already meaningful connections. As we grow our alumni network, we look forward to keeping you updated on where these alumni end up and how you can get involved!

Itโ€™s getting colder outside, and holiday music can be heard on the radio. That means that our 2022 Farmers Market season has come to an end. Weโ€™d like to say โ€œthank youโ€ to everyone who helped make this season possible. With this being GardenShareโ€™s first year sharing management of the Canton, Potsdam, and Gouverneur markets, we are grateful for the ever bountiful support of the community, our vendors, and our volunteers that helped make this year a success. Weโ€™re also incredibly thankful for our market manager, Kathryn Puleo, for joining the GardenShare team and taking on this brand new position.

Itโ€™s auction time again! We had a very successful first-ever online auction last year, and we invite you to join the fun of this yearโ€™s lineup! Just in time for the holidays, our focus will again be on unique, local ideas. Locally made/grown and hand-crafted items are popular, and people love shared experiences โ€“ fishing, bird walks, canoe trips, hikes, to name just a few! Do you have a special skill/gift/art you could share? Maybe consider offering a gardening, cooking, food preservation, paddling, or basketweaving class!

The auction will launch on Friday, November 25, and run until Sunday, December 4 โ€“ the perfect time to help our supporters keep their holiday gift buying local! We hope to beat [โ€ฆ]

Donโ€™t Miss Out!

Our first Eat the Science workshop takes place on Wednesday, November 9th! Learn the latest science on walnuts while cooking along with us. (And best of all, the workshop is free and youโ€™ll earn 1 CPEU!) More details below.

Walnuts for Well-Being: Recipe Hacks that Save Time in the Kitchen Wednesday, November 9th from 1:00-2:00PM EST

The busy-ness of the Fall season is upon us with school in full swing and the holidays on our heels. Feeling frazzled and short on time might be a common feeling for many. Join our inaugural workshop and learn time saving meal hacks with walnuts through two unique recipes that can be repurposed various ways in a week, demonstrated by Kristy and Jackie.

The recipes and hacks can save time and reduce stress, but also the ingredients, like the powerhouse walnut, have been clinically studied and demonstrate an emerging role in supporting mental well-being. Walnuts have a unique matrix of bioactive nutrients and phytochemicals that may support beneficial effects on mood and mental health, including polyunsaturated fatty acids, specifically the plant-based omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid. Walnuts are the only nut to provide an excellent source of this essential fatty acid (2.5g/oz)1. Each recipe will be paired with the latest research that has shown walnut consumption and potential support for mood and overall well-being.
