Earlier this week, the Labor Religion Coalition of New York State and our allies at Citizen Action, Community Service Society, and the NYS Poor Peopleโ€™s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival hosted a rally, press conference, and community forum in support of the campaign to #EndMedicalDebt in New York State. Each year, non-profit hospitals across New York receive over $1 billion in tax support; despite the subsidies, though, these same hospitals choose to take low-income New Yorkers to court over unpaid medical bills, rather than offering them mandated financial assistance. Our #EndMedicalDebt forum was just one action in the campaign to build patient power and pass laws to protect vulnerable New Yorkers from predatory hospital billing.

At Tuesdayโ€™s forum, we heard from a number of community members on the impact that medical debt has had on their lives, in particular during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, in observance of International Human Rights Day, we write to you to share one of those stories. Many of us have been personally impacted by the absurdity of our healthcare system, and [โ€ฆ]

The holiday season is officially here: a time for joy, celebration, and gratitude. Among the many things to be grateful for this year is the ever-present gift of agriculture. From the delicious food we prepare for our loved ones to the beautiful trees that light up our homes with holiday cheer, it is a privilege to enjoy our farmersโ€™ great bounty.
OIn November, Commissioner Ball visited NYS Grown & Certified Stokoe Farms, a 6th generation, family-owned Christmas Tree farm in Scottsville, NY, for the Departmentโ€™s annual tree-cutting event. The event promotes New Yorkโ€™s Christmas tree growers and encourages consumers to buy local this holiday season. A beautiful nine-foot-tall Fraser Fir is now on display at the Finger Lakes Welcome Center in Geneva, so if youโ€™re travelling this season, be sure to stop in and check it out! In fact, each Welcome Center around the State is featuring a New York State Grown & Certified Christmas tree or wreath, helping to highlight New Yorkโ€™s Christmas tree industry. With approximately 300,000 New York-grown trees sold by more than 750 farms in Upstate New York each year, New York ranks sixth in the US for the number of acres dedicated to growing Christmas trees.

Between 2015 and 2020, non-profit hospitals in New York State sued over 53,000 patients. Our hospitals are required to offer financial assistance but instead choose to take patients to court, despite receiving over $1 billion in tax support each year. As a result, thereโ€™s a growing campaign in New York State to #EndMedicalDebt by growing the power of patients and passing laws that would protect us from predatory hospital billing.

Seeding the Future, one land steward at a time

11/29/2022

This Giving Tuesday, Farm School NYC is excited to spotlight a steward of their community. NYC is known for many things, but a strong sense of community is not one of them. Frances, currently a program co-coordinator with Farm School NYC, is shifting this narrative through her work in service to land and community.

Frances (she / they) is a black woman land steward and community organizer. Frances entered Farm School as a student while learning to grow food and medicine with La Finca del Sur Community Farm in the South Bronx. They were amazed to see a program in the city that focused on food and land justice with a social justice framework.

Today marks the eve of #GivingTuesday, and we are excited to share that we have secured a $10,000 donation match.

Donations sustain us and allow us to see the growth that Frances envisions for Farm School NYC โ€“ from expanding the rural and urban pipeline to increasing the number of cohorts. At this moment filled with climate anxiety, your gift not only builds out our programs, it also helps us support and connect with farmer faculty and folks working to seed the future we hope to build.
