Join the Labor Religion Coalition of New York State on Monday for a #HealthcareJustice Film Screening

09/08/2023

Youโ€™re invited to a screening of the new film, ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™–๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™Ž, about the struggle for universal healthcare in the United States. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, including the creators of the film, experts in the field, and organizers in the movement for universal healthcare.

During the panel, weโ€™ll be discussing how weโ€™re organizing to make healthcare a human right. This year, more than 68,000 Americans will die from a lack of access to adequate healthcare.

500,000 families will file for bankruptcy because of medical expenses. These numbers only represent a fraction of the trauma that millions of people experience every day in the American for-profit healthcare industry. Yet over 70% of Americans support switching to a universal healthcare system. Healing US stands as the final case for American healthcare to be free and accessible to all.

Join us on ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜†, ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ, at the Holiday Inn Saratoga Springs (232 Broadway). Attendees should arrive by 6:30 pm in order to take a COVID-19 rapid test, provided on-site. The screening will begin at 7 pm.

September is recognized nationally as Hunger Action Month, a time to raise awareness, take action, and collaborate on solutions to combat food insecurity in our communities. In collaboration with our partner not-for-profit organizations and New York State agencies, the Department has long been committed to the fight against hunger, prioritizing initiatives like the Nourish New York program, the 30 percent New York State initiative, the Council on Hunger and Food Policy, our Farm-to-School program and Farmersโ€™ Market Nutrition program, and so many more. Citywide students recently completed Irrigation and moved into Crop Management. During Irrigation, they enjoyed touring Morning Glory Garden in The Bronx and Brooklynโ€™s Red Hook Farms, better understanding the watering methods of the unique growing spaces and why. Students also worked together, familiarizing themselves with the parts of a drip irrigation system. See the photo below, captured by a current student, of a hands-on practice build at Red Hook Farms. We thank our co-facilitators, Jane and Maya, as well as our sites and guides, Cayla, Aazam, and Brendan.

Making their way through Crop Management, students are exploring the best crops for NYCโ€™s climate, reviewing typical crop plant families and their specific needs, and beginning to imagine their own creative crop plans. Weโ€™re excited to welcome first-time FSNYC facilitators, Grace and Ciara of Randallโ€™s Island Park Alliance Urban Farm. Stay tuned to hear how their crop plans turn out!

The Summer Meals Collaborative works to ensure that kids are able to get the food they need. One of the most important ways we do that is through advocacy and public policy efforts. The Collaborative works with elected officials and government agencies to strengthen and improve access to the summer nutrition programs that help feed kids throughout the Capital Region and beyond. The 2023 Farm Bill, which will be taken up by Congress in the fall, includes nutrition programs that support Summer Meals nationwide and will be pivotal to the future availability of meals for children, particularly in rural communities.

As a Collaborative, our advocacy efforts, particularly through Hunger Solutions New York, have assisted in securing a rule change (that will go into effect next summer) which allows for the home delivery of Summer Meals in rural communities. We canโ€™t do this work without your support โ€“ donate today to help us in our advocacy efforts.

Visit Your Local County Fair for a Chance to Win Tickets to the Great New York State Fair

New York is home to more than 50 county and youth fairs, providing opportunities for New Yorkers of all ages to learn about local agriculture, where our food comes from, and how itโ€™s grown, harvested, and marketed to the public.

This summer, to help promote county and youth fairs across the state as well as celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Taste NY program, the Department is hosting a new #FindMeAtTheFair contest. For a chance to win prizes, including Taste NY regional gift baskets and VIP seating for concerts at The Great New York State Fair, county fairs across the state will offer a โ€œFind Me at the Fairโ€ New York State-themed selfie station that fairgoers can interact with. To participate in the contest, fairgoers can post a selfie on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #FindMeAtTheFair. A QR code provided at the selfie station will provide directions for how to ensure participants are entered in the Taste NY #FindMeAtTheFair contest.
