September is Hunger Action Month, when people across the United States come together to fight hunger. As Feeding America puts it; “It’s a month to spread the word and take action on the hunger crisis — and dedicate ourselves to a solution.” Around 15,430 St. Lawrence County residents, or 14.2% of the population, are food insecure – which can range from a reduction in food quality and variety to reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns.

GardenShare has a collection of resources around the issues of hunger. Do you like books? Videos? Podcast? We got it all! Educate yourself with this list of resources on our website and take action today by registering for GardenShare’s Fight Hunger Fair & 5K!

The event will be on Sunday, September 17, at the Village Park in Canton from 12:30-3:30pm.
Your registration and participation in the 5K supports GardenShare’s mission of increasing access to healthy, nutritious local food for our North Country neighbors. Registration is $25 per person.

The event will be filled with a variety of food-centered activities, community partnerships, and the option to participate in a 5K race or a 1-mile Veggie Adventure Run to raise funds. Prizes will be awarded to the top fundraising solo runner and team!

September is Hunger Action Month, and in St. Lawrence County hunger action is still needed. Get your sneakers ready for our annual 𝙁𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙃𝙪𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 5𝙆 𝙖𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙤𝙣’𝙨 𝙑𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙠 𝙤𝙣 𝙎𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙮, 𝙎𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 17𝙩𝙝, 2023 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 12:30-3:30𝙥𝙢!

This fantastic family-fun event focuses on raising awareness for Hunger Action Month. Experience a day filled with a variety of food-centered activities, community partnerships, and the option to participate in a 5K race or a 1-mile Veggie Adventure Run.

Registration for the 5K is now open! The race will begin at Canton’s Village Park around 1:00pm; runners and walkers of all ages and levels are encouraged to participate. You may sign up as an individual or create a team with your family, friends, coworkers, or teammates. Donations can also be made through RunSignUp to individuals and teams. Prizes will be awarded to the top fundraising solo runner and team!

𝙉𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙟𝙤𝙞𝙣 𝙪𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣? You can still participate! Sign up online and complete the race wherever and whenever you’d like. If you’re not able to run but would still like to support the 5K, consider donating to an individual or team!

We’re excited to announce that August 6 – 12 will be National Farmers Market Week! This year’s theme set by the Farmers Market Federation of NY, “Farmers Markets Bring People Together,” emphasizes how these markets promote building a community and connect patrons from diverse backgrounds.

Shopping at farmers markets is a direct way of supporting local farmers, allowing them to continue to provide outstanding produce and artisanal goods while keeping money within the local economy. To celebrate, we’ll feature unique vendors daily on our Facebook page throughout the week. Join us in discovering and supporting these amazing contributors to our flourishing farmers markets! 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 United Way of the Greater Capital Region 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻𝘀

The Summer Meals Collaborative works to ensure that kids are able to get the food they need. One of the most important ways we do that is through advocacy and public policy efforts. The Collaborative works with elected officials and government agencies to strengthen and improve access to the summer nutrition programs that help feed kids throughout the Capital Region and beyond. The 2023 Farm Bill, which will be taken up by Congress in the fall, includes nutrition programs that support Summer Meals nationwide and will be pivotal to the future availability of meals for children, particularly in rural communities.

As a Collaborative, our advocacy efforts, particularly through Hunger Solutions New York, have assisted in securing a rule change (that will go into effect next summer) which allows for the home delivery of Summer Meals in rural communities. We can’t do this work without your support – donate today to help us in our advocacy efforts.
