Happy Holidays from Albany Community Action Partnership (ACAP)

12/17/2022

To All of Our Supporters and Friends,

ACAP would like to wish you the happiest of holidays to you and your families and want to thank everyone who has made our work possible. Though this time of year encourages reflection and expressions of gratitude, we experience the positive impact of our work on practically a daily basis. A smile on a childโ€™s face, an expression of relief from a customer visiting our food pantry, celebrating when someone receives a job offer after completing our certification program โ€“ these are things we get to see every day. This season does not override the accomplishments for the whole year; they invite us to share them with you all.

Thank you for your support!
Happy Holidays!

ACAP partners with families and communities to expand opportunities and build stronger networks to foster upward economic mobility.

Our last public course offering for this year is wrapping up. Enterprise was led by Woke Foods co-founder and FSNYC grad, Ysanet Batista, along with Choy Division Farm founder and farmer, Christina Chan. Participants covered the fundamentals of business planning, development, and management of enterprises in a local food system while looking at various enterprise models and envisioning to plan their own. Figuring out the first steps in their ventures will help participants create healthy systems that allow their projects to thrive with longevity.

Farm School NYC students attended The Future of Food Symposium last month. The Columbia Climate School hosted this conference. Geography2050 and the American Geographical Society funded 15 spaces so FSNYC community members could be present. They also connected students to resource networks beyond the conference. In discussing the Future of Food, it is imperative to highlight and create space for BIPOC. We appreciate the coordination and generosity of AGS and hope universities [โ€ฆ]

The holiday season is officially here: a time for joy, celebration, and gratitude. Among the many things to be grateful for this year is the ever-present gift of agriculture. From the delicious food we prepare for our loved ones to the beautiful trees that light up our homes with holiday cheer, it is a privilege to enjoy our farmersโ€™ great bounty.
OIn November, Commissioner Ball visited NYS Grown & Certified Stokoe Farms, a 6th generation, family-owned Christmas Tree farm in Scottsville, NY, for the Departmentโ€™s annual tree-cutting event. The event promotes New Yorkโ€™s Christmas tree growers and encourages consumers to buy local this holiday season. A beautiful nine-foot-tall Fraser Fir is now on display at the Finger Lakes Welcome Center in Geneva, so if youโ€™re travelling this season, be sure to stop in and check it out! In fact, each Welcome Center around the State is featuring a New York State Grown & Certified Christmas tree or wreath, helping to highlight New Yorkโ€™s Christmas tree industry. With approximately 300,000 New York-grown trees sold by more than 750 farms in Upstate New York each year, New York ranks sixth in the US for the number of acres dedicated to growing Christmas trees.

With guidance from FSNYC staff, students were encouraged to reflect on their time with Farm School NYC. During this yearโ€™s Seminar course, students produced capstone projects illustrating their growth.

A photo of Gabe demonstrating his project at The Peopleโ€™s Forum is pictured on the right. Students were able to present to friends, family, faculty, and the community at large about their time and takeaways from FSNYC.

Students were also able to explore different ways they could continue to support one another beyond the program and deepen some already meaningful connections. As we grow our alumni network, we look forward to keeping you updated on where these alumni end up and how you can get involved!

For me, November marks the gradual transition from the last days of the harvest season into winter. New Yorkers are certainly no strangers to the coldโ€” we are a hearty bunch โ€” and we recognize the earlier sunsets and gusty days as signs of the holiday season, when we turn to delicious, festive meals with friends and family to keep us warm and nourished.

As we turn the page on another bountiful harvest season and plan our Thanksgiving celebrations, I urge us all to take a moment to feel grateful for our hardworking agricultural community. I am proud to work alongside the one percent of the population that feeds the remaining 99 percent with delicious, high-quality foods and beverages.

This Thanksgiving, I encourage you and your families to help support farmers and producers across New York State by sourcing locally for your meal. Between community farmersโ€™ markets, local farms, Taste NY Markets, and more, you can find everything you need for a complete Thanksgiving dinner brought to you from the hardworking farmers here in New York.

Wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving!
Commissioner Richard Ball

Recently in Crop Management, students explored best practices for maintaining crops in NYCโ€™s climate. Students reported the class brought together the practical and spiritual aspects of connecting with the land and made it seem logistically possible to engage with making plans and organizing.

From identifying companion plants at the Good Life Garden in Brooklyn to harvesting from pear trees at Taqwa Community Farm in The Bronx, students had a robust experience envisioning crop plans during the course. We share gratitude for guest speakers, Kofi, Nayelis, Abu Talib, and Quan. Stay tuned for updates next month as students begin preparing for winter!

During the second session on land, students successfully constructed and installed an irrigation system together at both Red Hook Farms and the Brooklyn Grange!

During the final class, students shared group presentations exploring the politics and history of water as well as how to apply skills theyโ€™ve learned including water pressure, budgets to build systems, different layout options, and finding ways to use community resources. Citywide students are now in Crop Management, where they will explore the best practices for maintaining crops in NYCโ€™s climate. Stay tuned for updates next month!

This month we celebrate both Juneteenth and Pride. Pride was a riot, started by our trans and disabled elders; A display of collective power against oppression. We also celebrate resistance through Juneteenth, a longstanding Black American holiday to uplift resilience and create space for Black joy, rest, and reflection. Citywide students have recently started Learning the Land. With the guidance of co-facilitators, kale and Jess, students are encouraged to cultivate deeper, multidimensional connections with nature and place.
Walking through lower Manhattan, the groups was introduced to native plants and โ€œweeds,โ€ before visiting the African Burial Ground National Monument and learning of the intentional erasure of Black and Indigenous peoples and histories.
This course has provided a space to deep dive into the plants and people that were (and sometimes are still) here, asking of the students, โ€œWhat is your responsibility to the land and its beings- both seen and unseen? How do you really understand where you are?โ€

Last month, Claudia worked alongside GreenThumb to tour high tunnels across the Bronx. We visited New Roots Community Farm, Garden of Happiness, and Bissel Gardens. These three sites warmly welcomed participants into their community space, allowing us to explore their high tunnels. We learned which crops are grown, how they coordinate who grows in the tunnels, and how they paid for them.
Additionally, Claudia hosted a Q&A session with NRCS regional conservationist, Liz, to create clarity surrounding the EQIP and AMA application process. Check out [โ€ฆ]
