The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York

Friends, colleagues and partners joined together for the 32nd Annual People’s State of the State

01/11/2024

Yesterday, The Food Pantries for the Capital District joined friends, colleagues and partners for the 32nd Annual People’s State of the State organized by The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York. It was a great day of advocacy work in support of Emergency Food Relief Programs (Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens)!

With increased service levels across NY, a recent NYS Dept of Health report confirming that 1 in 4 NY adults are food insecure, and stagnant State funding for essential programs Nourish NY and HPNAP, our state government must do more! Scroll through for pics from the day and an overview of the budget recommendations we are calling for!

Representatives from Commission on Economic Opportunity attended the People’s State of the State yesterday

01/11/2024

Representatives from CEO attended the People’s State of the State yesterday and as part of the The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York are urging Governor Hochul to fund both HPNAP & Nourish NY programs at $75 million for New York State Fiscal Year 2025.

“Food Pantries are simply not able to keep food on the shelves at current HPNAP funding levels. It is as simple as that. Our pantry in Mechanicville now services as many families in a week as we previously used to see in a month – with less donations and funding.”
Megan Quillinan, Mechanicville Area Community Services Center, Executive Director, Saratoga County

“The Capital District Area Labor Federation and all of our unions, union members and their families are urging the New York State Government to fund our food pantries. The need is greater than ever. Many of our members and retirees are using food pantries regularly because they can not afford housing, medical, transportation and food.”
Mark Emanatian, Executive Director, Capital District Area Labor Federation

Albany County, Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and United Way of the Greater Capital Region announce first-of-its-kind partnership to close County’s meal gap

We were thrilled to join our partners Monday morning at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, where Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and County Legislator Wanda Willingham announced groundbreaking support for nonprofits working to advance nutrition security in the Capital Region. Next year’s Albany County budget will include $175,000 for the Food Bank and an additional $75,000 for United Way of the Greater Capital Region.

We are grateful for the support and leadership of County Executive McCoy and Legislator Willingham as we all work together to end nutrition insecurity in our local communities. In 2023 alone, the Food Bank and its 58 partner agencies will serve 3.7 million meals to Albany County families and individuals in-need.

While this $250,000 investment will allow for an additional 400,000 meals to be served next year, there is currently a meal gap of 1.4 million meals in Albany County.

Help us achieve our goal of eliminating nutrition insecurity the Greater Capital Region by supporting United Way and our partners today. Your donation will help us continue and expand our efforts to invest in partners that are reframing the conversation around nutrition insecurity and developing new approaches to meet the needs of the families and […]
