The sounds of children laughing and sharing summer stories have filled our schools once again. As we prepare for the new school year, there’s a comforting certainty for many students, knowing that they will receive healthy breakfasts and lunches every school day.

Ensuring that our children are well-fed is one of the great services provided by our public schools.

But, sadly, there are still gaps that need your attention.

Too many students leave school on Friday afternoons not knowing where their next meal will come from. They return to households struggling to put food on the table, where three square meals a day are not guaranteed.

Since 2014, the Schenectady County Weekend Backpack Partnership has worked

to keep school children fed by giving students a package of shelf-stable food to take home for weekend meals.

Our partners in this project include the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, the City Mission of Schenectady, local school district liaisons, and generous funding partners. Together, we’ve made a difference by feeding thousands of children through this program, but our work is far from over.

You can help us fight food insecurity and improve outcomes for Schenectady County schoolchildren by making a donation to this essential program. For just $275, you can provide a child’s backpack of food for the entire school year. Your donation to the Weekend Backpack Fund is needed now more than ever.
