Our Natasha Pernicka on Empire State Weekly!

01/26/2024

THIS MORNING, Angelo Santabarbara had an insightful interview with John Gray at WTEN on Empire State Weekly, alongside Natasha Pernicka from the The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York. Today, we highlighted the crucial need for increased funding in the state budget to combat food insecurity across New York State. ๐ŸŒŸ Weโ€™re pushing for support in the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance (HPNAP) ๐ŸŽ and NourishNY ๐ŸŒฝ programs, and advocating for direct contracts for emergency relief providers to ensure a more streamlined and efficient distribution process. Letโ€™s unite to end hunger in New York! ๐Ÿ™ #EndHungerNY #CommunityUnity Dustin Longmire

Itโ€™s 2024! Weโ€™ve been busy planning for the year and the photo below isnโ€™t the only thing we are excited to share from our annual staff retreat earlier this month. Stay tuned for updates on plans weโ€™ve been working on. We appreciate your patience this month, allowing us to keep our heads down and focus on internal activity. More info on what to expect next is coming soon..

We are immensely grateful to our community and board for supporting our largest end-of-year crowdfunding target ever! Focusing on cultivating monthly sustainers is crucial this year, especially since we wonโ€™t have a cohort of students dedicating contributions to our efforts on a consistent basis. Please support our mission and continue to fortify our foundation year-round by signing up to be a monthly sustainer today. Your continued support impacts FSNYC (and NYC) for years to come!

Do you have an idea about how NYC can strengthen agriculture through advocacy or legislation? We want to help you create and run a campaign around it! From carbon sequestration to native species preservation, let us know your idea, and we can help you make it happen. Our farmer advocate, Jocelyn Germany, will support the campaigns. Please e-mail Jocelyn@farmschoolnyc.org to share ideas, ask questions, and learn more.

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) allows kids and teens age 18 and under access to healthy meals at no cost throughout the summer months. Most sites are โ€œopenโ€ sites, where there is no sign-up or paperwork required; kids can just drop by when meals are served.

Across the state, community groups, school districts, anti-hunger organizations, and the New York State Education Department are working in partnership to raise community awareness and increase site participation to expand access to summer meals. In summer 2023, this vital program allowed nearly 450 schools and community organizations to serve free, healthy meals at thousands of sites across New York State.

However, federal-level data shows that only 1 in 4 of New Yorkโ€™s low-income children ate summer meals in July 2022 (FRAC 2023). This translates to only 425,114 children accessing a summer lunch compared to the 1.5 million children who rely on free or reduced-price school lunch every school day. Read more from Hunger Solutions New York on SFSP participation here.

If youโ€™re interested in becoming a sponsor or site in summer 2024, our dedicated summer meals page, SummerMealsNY.org, includes information to help you get started. Access outreach materials, USDAโ€™s interactive mapping tools, previous webinar recordings, and more so you can help [โ€ฆ]

Last week, The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York marched to the NYS Capitol

01/16/2024

Last week, The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York marched to the NYS Capitol to tell the state what is needed to support frontline community food providers โ€“ food pantries and food rescues in each of our neighborhoods.

We hope that the Governorโ€™s budget today will reflect what weโ€™ve been asking for:

-$75 million for Hunger Prevention Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP)

-$75 million for Nourish NY

โ€“ and to continue direct contracts for both of these programs with ALL types of providers, like food pantries, soup kitchens, food rescues, AND food banks

Friends, colleagues and partners joined together for the 32nd Annual People’s State of the State

01/11/2024

Yesterday, The Food Pantries for the Capital District joined friends, colleagues and partners for the 32nd Annual Peopleโ€™s State of the State organized by The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York. It was a great day of advocacy work in support of Emergency Food Relief Programs (Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens)!

With increased service levels across NY, a recent NYS Dept of Health report confirming that 1 in 4 NY adults are food insecure, and stagnant State funding for essential programs Nourish NY and HPNAP, our state government must do more! Scroll through for pics from the day and an overview of the budget recommendations we are calling for!
