National School Breakfast Week 2024: Celebrate and Spread the Word

𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙒𝙚𝙚𝙠 𝙞𝙨 𝘼𝙡𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚!
National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) is next week: March 4-8! Hunger Solutions New York and No Kid Hungry New York invite you to join us in celebrating school breakfast and the school nutrition professionals who work hard to ensure access in New York.

New York’s kids need consistent access to a nutritious meal every morning to be ready for a day of learning. In districts across the state, more schools than ever are now able to offer breakfast at no cost to all students through CEP. Yet barriers to traditional breakfast, served in the cafeteria before the start of the school day, can still keep kids from eating their morning meal at school. Schools can leverage Breakfast After the Bell to improve access and maximize participation. Innovative service models such as Breakfast in the Classroom or Grab and Go can meet kids where they are and cut down on time constraints to ensure they have time to eat!

This National School Breakfast Week, we are highlighting the creative ways school breakfast programs are nourishing students and how you can share the impact your program makes in your community!

Save The Date! NYS Food Summit June 12, 2024

The Food Summit is a biennial event put together by The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York. The event is designed to bring together food assistance providers, academics, advocates, and communities across New York. The all-day symposium-style event aims to educate and share best practices, research, and innovations in hunger relief efforts.

The Food Summit will be held on June 12, 2024, at the Armory of Russell Sage College in Albany. We are expecting 400 in-person participants and 500 virtual participants.

The focus areas for discussion are:
• Strengthening the Food Assistance Networks
• Food as Medicine
• Anti-Hunger Advocacy and Action

We are looking for speakers to share about their work, research, and experiences. If you are interested in speaking, please feel free to fill out this Request for Proposal. Don’t forget to save the date – registration for the event will be available in mid-March.

It’s time to get in the guide! GardenShare’s 2024/25 Local Food Guide is open to all farmers, restaurants, and retail locations that showcase locally produced food in St. Lawrence County.

This year we will be printing 22,000 copies through North Country This Week. 6,500+ of which will be mailed directly to food lovers throughout the county. Copies will also be distributed at local hospitals, restaurants, schools, human services agencies, local businesses, and more!

Physical forms are being mailed out in a few days, but if you don’t receive one (or just can’t wait!) you can find fillable PDF forms here.

Carlene and Annabelle are excited to wish everyone in St. Lawrence County a happy new year! As we enter the depths of the winter months here in the north country we are beginning to prepare for this years growing season. As always there is a great deal of preparation needed for our counties’ Farmers Markets, along with beginning work on our 2024/2025 Local Food Guide, and preparing for our 2024 Bonus Bucks allocations in the coming months.

We are incredibly appreciative of the support extended to us throughout our community and can’t wait to get back to work supporting our local food system and working to end food insecurity in St. Lawrence County!

NOFA-NY is recognizing Certified Organic farmer and Hammond, NY local Liz Bawden, of Bawden farms, as Farmer of the Year at their Annual Winter Conference on January 21, 2024 in Syracuse! Bawden Farms has been certified organic through NOFA-NY for 23 years. Additionally she has served on the Board of Directors for NOFA-NY and as a president of the Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance (NODPA).
