The NY HELP hiring program has been implemented to streamline the appointment process to allow State agencies to hire diverse, qualified permanent employees quickly and without examinations.

All New York State employees hired under the HELP program will be appointed on a permanent basis. And starting in May of 2024, Civil Service will be launching an expanded program to streamline hiring all open-competitive positions.

With Women’s History Month just around the corner in March, NYSDOL is recognizing March Equal Pay Day on March 6, which commemorates how much longer the average woman would have to work to earn as much as the average male counterpart earned in the previous year.

One strategy that women are employing to close the gender wage gap is to enter industries previously dominated by men, such as the construction industry. During November’s National Apprenticeship Week, we celebrated the great things that the Mason Tenders are doing with women apprentices in local unions 78 and 79.

With New York State registered apprenticeships, you truly “earn as you learn”, gaining invaluable on the job training while earning a fair and equitable paycheck.

Governor Kathy Hochul and the State are working hard to protect New Yorkers who receive government assistance via Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards from thieves. Governor Hochul announced that a new EBT lock/unlock tool on the Connect EBT app will enable card users to easily lock their EBT cards when not in use to protect against scammers who may have stolen their personal identification numbers using “skimming” devices.

Card skimmers are covertly placed over card reading machines at legitimate retailers to copy EBT card and PIN information from users. The NYSDOL reminds you to never share your personal identification numbers, and to be extra wary of skimmers when checking out any purchases.

For more information about the new EBT lock/unlock tool, read the Governor’s release.

More than 8 million electric and gas metered customers will get some much-needed relief thanks to a $200 million New York State energy bill credit announced by Governor Kathy Hochul. This one-time credit will be distributed to customers within roughly 45 days of the utilities receiving the budget funds. This is another step in a clean-energy agenda that reduces costs for some of New York’s most vulnerable citizens.

For more information about the utility bill relief fund, read the Governor’s press release.
